Shocking title isn’t it? Yes it is true one of Zelda greatest developers never finished the original Legend of Zelda. In a recent interview with Game Informer Aonuma admits that the game is a difficult game to beat, every time he tries to play it he gets “Game Over” too many times and as a result he never completed the game. Here is what he had to say about this.
I’ve never actually finished it… I almost feel like there’s still no game more difficult than it. Every time I try to play it I end up getting ‘Game Over’ a few too many times and giving up partway through. Certainly after playing the original Zelda for the first time, I didn’t ever think that I wanted to make a game like that.
If he found the game that difficult why did he join the Zelda team developing other Zelda titles? Well it all has to do with A Link to the Past. Jump inside for more details about this.
The level of difficulty on the original Legend of Zelda did have an effect on the other Zelda titles, if you are a core Zelda fan you can admit that some of the games in the series, such as The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, are a bit easy to beat. The reason behind this level of easiness, he doesn’t want to create a Zelda game like the original Zelda again.
We must all give thanks to A Link to the Past for hooking Aonuma to the series for if it wasn’t for that game who knows who would be developing Zelda now. Here is what he had to say about that game.
That sense of exploration of the world itself was really where I latched on to the series
Many Zelda fans enjoy playing A Link to the Past and Aonuma is no different. That game had a strong influence on the video game, Marvelous, the very first game that he directed. When Marvelous caught Shigeru Miyamoto’s attention he brought Aonuma to the Zelda team.
